Seasonal & Local Where Possible

The Food industry represents c. 38% of GHG emissions and equates to c. 5% of the NHS carbon footprint. This is greater than the decarbonisation opportunity of each of anaesthetic gases, fleet vehicles and inhalers. There is significant evidence of the co-benefits for preventative health, and disease management associated with a plant-rich diet. This could reduce the volume and complexity of future demand for healthcare interventions and potentially reduce the costs of food waste to the NHS.

We are working to deliver increased plant-rich food options to NHS staff and patients that will improve dietary health, offer greater understanding of nutritional sufficiency and sources of protein but also reduce the carbon emissions of food services and potentially reduce the cost of food waste.
We are partnering with food service suppliers into the NHS, highly experienced change partners that have successfully delivered this work elsewhere with the objective of running a number of pilots as test cases before sharing this learning in a ‘recipe book’ for wider adoption.
